If you applied the new standard of safety above all else, including freedom, retrospectively, then allied forces might not have fought in WW1 or WW2. Instead, we would have asked:

“what will life be like under German occupation? Will they kill us if we comply?”

And if we could have been assured that we would be ruled and not killed, then the west would have laid down and complied rather than sending every able bodied male to fight to the death for freedom.
