They aren’t “women”, they’re “birthing people”

Harvard has sparked a fierce backlash after referring to women as âbirthing peopleâ to be more inclusive of those who identify as nonbinary or transgender.
In a tweet from November, Harvard Medical Schoolâs Postgraduate and Continuing Education wrote: âGlobally, ethnic minority pregnant and birthing people suffer worse outcomes and experiences during and after pregnancy and childbirth,â while promoting a panel discussion about âMaternal Justice.â
Responding to the criticism, Harvard acknowledged that âthe webinar panelists used the term âbirthing personâ to include those who identify as non-binary or transgender because not all who give birth identify as âwomenâ or âgirls.â
